Water in Kenya
|
I wonder how many hours we spend deciding which school we’d like our kids to get into? We look at the league tables, chat to other parents and push for the ‘best’. But whichever school our kids get into, they will at least get an education. But imagine if there weren’t any schools in our town? Unthinkable isn’t it?
Middlesbrough Community Church has been partnering with a community in the Mount Elgon region of Kenya. It’s pretty rural (near the Kenya-Uganda border) and we’ve been raising funds and sending teams to helping complete a school & church building and establish micro-finance initiatives – offering practical support to lift people out of poverty and by beginning in business. A team visited recently in April 2010 - you can track their journey from this video.
In Mount Elgon, Kenya, the first school in the region has been started in an area thirsty for education. The whole community has been mobilised to build this school. Education will help lift this generation of children out of poverty, ill health and limited opportunity. During 2009, MCC recorded and produced a CD – ‘Glory in the Highest: Carols for Mt. Elgon’. It’s a mix of contemporary and traditional Christmas music. We raised enough money to build the school! The school will also serve as a health centre (the government has committed to place a nurse in the village if a suitable building can be found) as well as a church.
We've now got a group up and running to raise more money to provide clean water in the Mount Elgon region. It's called TAP.
The community has no running water or a well. During 2009, more than a dozen people died from cholera - a disease entirely preventable if clean water was available. If you’d like to support this work too, then we’ll ensure all of your gift reaches the community – nothing will go towards administration. You can give on-line here.
